Human Rights

counting pennies - thousands of them

In 1948, the United Nations laid out 30 Human Rights so that the atrocities of World Wars and the Holocaust would never happen again. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights isn't a law and it isn't a treaty and not everyone agrees with it or follows its rules. It's a document, translated into over 330 languages that calls on ALL of us to work as hard as we can to guarantee a world of freedom and peace.

What a world this would be if every human right was respected and followed the 30 Human Rights.

In Room 192, we have been studying these human rights and the students are gaining an understanding of how fortunate we are to live in our beautiful country of Canada, with its relative freedom and respect for the rights of all humans.
Our official cheque (money order)!
Each student got to carry some
rolls of pennies to the bank!

In December, We read the book "Three Cups of Tea" by Greg Mortenson. It was the children's version of his book "Three Cups of Tea" about his failed attempt to climb K2 and the community in Afghanistan that took him in to help him get well. He vowed when he left that he would come back one day and build a school. He did that and much, much more.

At the back of the book, the website for Pennies For Peace is given. Upon further investigation and with the great teamwork from our buddies in Room 188, we decided to start bringing in pennies for this great cause. We found out that 1penny can buy 1 pencil and $1.00 can pay for a teacher's salary for month. In 5 short weeks, $164.80 was raised - what a fabulous effort from our two classes!
